Are resin coasters heat resistant? What a hot mug really does

30/08/2026

Are resin coasters heat resistant

Are resin coasters heat resistant? Up to a point. A resin coaster will take a normal mug of tea or coffee without complaint. Standard craft resin starts to soften at around 50°C, and the base of a mug sits well below that. What resin will not take is a pan, an oven dish, or anything straight off the hob. Warm mugs yes. Hot pans no.

How hot can a resin coaster get?

Most craft resins are rated to about 50°C, or 120°F. That figure comes from the resin makers themselves, not from us being cautious. ArtResin’s care guidance puts its cured limit at exactly that, and other craft brands sit in the same 50–60°C band.

A mug of tea straight off the kettle cools quickly at its base. By the time it touches the coaster, it is comfortably inside that range. That is why the pieces made in the studio are sold as coasters in the first place. They are made for this job.

Some resins go higher. Heat-resistant formulas can reach 93°C, but only after a full 21-day cure, and the makers void that figure if more than 6% colourant is added. So treat any “heatproof resin” claim you read online with a raised eyebrow. 50°C is the number we plan around.

What happens if resin gets too hot?

Below its limit, resin forgives. You might see a faint ring under a very hot mug. It usually fades as the piece cools. Nothing to do, nothing to fix.

Above its limit, resin does not forgive. It can soften, warp, cloud, or take a permanent dent where the hot thing sat. That damage does not reverse. This is why trays and dishes from the studio should never take anything straight from the oven or hob. Use a trivet. Your tray will thank you for the next twenty years.

The same logic applies to where a piece lives. A sunny windowsill, a radiator shelf, or a parked car in July can all push past 50°C. Resin keeps its gloss for years when it is kept somewhere ordinary and room temperature.

Will a hot mug leave a ring?

A normal mug, no. A mug straight from the microwave, possibly. Microwaved drinks heat the cup as well as the liquid, so the base arrives hotter than a kettle-poured cup. If your household runs on microwaved coffee, slip a saucer under it or give the drink a minute first.

If a mark does appear, do not scrub it. Let the coaster cool and check again. Most rings are temporary. For anything that lingers, a soft cloth and a little plastic polish brings the surface back. Our caring for resin page covers this in more detail.

Day to day, what does this mean?

Three habits keep a resin coaster looking new:

That is the whole regime. Resin is low-maintenance homeware. It just has one firm rule about heat, and now you know it.

Every coaster in the /product-category/made-in-the-studio/ is made in the studio in Wales, one at a time, and each listing states what the piece is made for. If you are ever unsure whether a piece suits a particular use, ask. We would rather answer a question than replace a warped tray.

Common questions

Can I put a mug straight from the microwave on a resin coaster? Best not to, or use a saucer. Microwaved mugs arrive hotter at the base than kettle-poured ones and can leave a temporary ring on standard resin.

Are resin coasters dishwasher safe? No. Dishwasher heat sits well above resin’s 50°C limit. Hand-wash with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, and dry with a soft towel.

Do heat marks fade? Usually, yes. Faint rings from a hot mug tend to disappear as the resin cools. Permanent damage only happens above the heat limit, from things like pans and oven dishes.
